Costa Rican Athletes and Sports Spots
Traditionally, there is a high
participation of professional players in the national games for the annual
soccer championship in Costa Rica. This event has given an opportunity to
talented Costa Rican soccer players, including Gabelo Conejo, Claudio Jara,
Pablo César Wanchope, and others, to take part in the outstanding international
event called World Cup, carried out in selected countries worldwide once every
four years. In fact, many soccer players have participated in international
championships, too. In the same way, Costa Rican athletes, like Luis Molina,
Silvia and Claudia Poll, among other national athletes, have participated at
swimming, athleticism, boxing, and other sports in Olympic Games and other
international sports events. As a matter of fact, sportsmen and sportswomen
come to Costa Rica because they consider it as a great place to practice their
sports. For example, many Costa Ricans and visitors have the chance to play
soccer, the most popular sport among “Ticos”, in the playing fields of each
town. Water sports are also really popular in Costa Rica. Surfers come from
around the globe to ride the waves off the Pacific and Caribbean beaches. There
are also scuba diving centers in Coco, Ocotal and Flamingo beach, which are
famous for the variety of diving spots. Snorkeling, a fun sport, can be enjoyed
off Caño Island and in Drake Bay. Finally, Garra de León Resort and Valle del
Sol offer special golf courses to prepare quality golf players.

Everybody knows Wanchope. He was born in Heredia in 1976. He is 1.93 m tall and weighs 78
kg. Today he is one of the most outstanding
soccer players in the world. In December 2000, he rose to become the 22nd player
in FIFA. He left Heredia’s Team in 1997 and signed on as a player for Derby

Medford is a well-known soccer player and an outstanding professional in this field. He started his career as a member of the Sagrada Familia Team, in the southern sector of San José. Then he went on to play with the Saprissa Team. He has played in different countries. His fans admire him very much. He has participated in two World Cup events. His achievements as a player have given Costa Rica glorious moments. Ticos never forget the goal against Sweden that gave the National Selection the opportunity to pass to the second round in Italy 90. As a player, he was spontaneous and creative, and made things happen. Medford has lived sublime moments in the field. Against the Mexican Team, in Azteca Stadium, he participated with great success. His goal for Costa Rica won the game. He is not an active player anymore. However, he became the trainer of Saprissa Team. Nery Antonio Brenes Cárdenas (born September 25, 1985) is a
Costa Rican sprinter,
He is one of Costa Rica's most prominent track and field athletes and
reached the semifinalsat the 400 m sprint in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Brenes won the
goldmedal in Istanbul in the 2012, setting a new national and championship
record. "Brenesimproved his personal mark by approximately one second, something nobody
expectedon a championship, taking the gold medal".

Claudia Maria Poll Ahrens (born 21 December 1972) is a Costa Rican
swimmer who competed in the 200 m to 800 m freestyle events. She is Costa Rica's
only gold-medalist, having won the country's first Olympic gold medals at the 1996 Olympics
in the 200 meter freestyle. She is a multiple national record holder in the freestyle
events. Her sister, Silvia, won Costa Rica's first Olympic medal at the 1988
Games. As of 2014, Claudia and Silvia are the only Costa Ricans to have won a medal at an
Olympics. Claudiaalso competed at the 2000 Olympics, where she won two bronze medals.
Moreover, she was the first person from Central America to win a gold medal.

category, she debuted in the Gimnasio Nacional, San Jose, Costa Rica, on November 17, 2007,
fighting Nicaraguan Aoska Xochilet Herrera and defeating her by KO. On December 19, 2009
Gabriel won the World Boxing Organization Welterweight World Championship. On March 31, 2011,
Hanna fought and defeated Melisenda Pérez once again
while defending
her World Championship Title during the inauguration acts of Costa Rica's new National Stadium
in front of 14.000 attendees. It took Hanna seven rounds to defeat her rival byknockout On
February 28, 2013 she lost her World Championship title to Oxandia Castillo by
a knockout in the
2nd round.
Keylor Navas
Keylor Antonio Navas Gamboa (born 15 December 1986) is a
Costa Rican professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Real Madrid and the
Costa Rica national football team, as a goalkeeper. After starting out at Saprissa
he moved to Albacete, and then to Levante in La Liga. Navas has played over 50
times for Costa Rica since making his debut in 2008. He made his debut in the FIFA World Cup on 14 June 2014,appearing in a
3–1 win against Uruguay in Fortaleza, Navas was named Man of the match several times after several outstanding saves which led to Costa Rica reaching
the quarter-finals for the first time ever.

Gabriela Gerarda Traña Trigueros (born 3 March 1980 in
Alajuela, Costa Rica) is a Costa Rican long-distance runner She competed in the marathon at the
2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2012, she was also the flag
bearer forthe Costa Rican team during the opening ceremony.

Sharolyn Scott Norman (born 27 October 1983 in Limón) is a Costa Rican
hurdler. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's 400 metres
